Containment-Lite

In the article “Containment-Lite”, the main point is the United States government needs to keep up good relationships with both China and India. The title of the article means that we need to work with China; however, we need to manage the relationship we have with China. China is important to the United States both economically and politically. For example, it’s powerful but it needs to be managed like a pit-bull. If you treat the pit-bit with respect and caution it will not turn on you, but it also needs to be trained so it will not try to overpower you. I agree with the author on the fact that we need to continue being allies with India and China in order to insure that they will continue working with the U.S. government.

Do Believe the Hype

Yes I do believe the hype about India using cell phones and technology to do banking because it’s new and exciting. It is hard to imagine migrant workers in rural areas doing banking using cell phones. This is a great idea. However, how are these uneducated workers supposed to know how to use this technology without somebody to teach them how to do it? In order for India to be a powerful country someone must be responsible for teaching these poor people how to utilize this technology. This technology created in India could impact the way I do banking in the future because I think this new way of banking will spread to the United States.

World in Balence

Our world’s population is constantly changing. China and India currently have the largest populations. Why do think they have the largest population?

Right now the population of the world is increasing at a very fast pace. Do you think the world’s population will increase or decrease in the next 50 years? Explain.

Our world is becoming more and more urbanized and more and more people are starting to live in cities. Do you think urbanization is a good thing? What are its pros and cons?

Most of the earth is covered by water but not a lot of that water can be used for our everyday use.
The scare of running out of water and contamination will be a big concern in the 21st century.
What are some ways we can save the water and keep it clean?

We need plants to survive. They turn carbon dioxide into oxygen, which we need to breathe. But lately, cars, factories, tractors etc. have been producing too much pollution and carbon dioxide. The world is now releasing more carbon dioxide then plants can convert.
Why is it important for people not to ignore the amount of pollution we produce?

Have you ever heard of global warming? I bet you have. Many people blame fossil fuel emissions and air pollutions for it.
Do you think global warming is true? Why or why not?

Experts notice that almost have the amount of plants and animals that were once on this earth are now gone and many of the forests now are endangered.
This is a serious issue, how do you think it got started?

Humans have altered about half the land on this earth.
What are some ways we have changed it?

The results and of human population growth have effects on animal’s environments everywhere.
Over fishing and tearing down forests are an example of things that may hurt animals and plants. What are some other examples?

The Battle of the Billionaires. China vs. India

"In the world of today, as well as for the foreseeable future, the world’s only population billionaires are China and India — at 1.35 billion and 1.21 billion, respectively. Even so, these two population giants are on distinctly different demographic paths." (Joseph Chamie)

1. We should care about how many people are in India because over the next 4 decades there will be an increase of 400 million people in India. As a result, India is expected to overtake China as the most populated country in the world in less than two decades, (perhaps around 2028).

2. India and China both have a over population problem, the government believe its nessessary to control the population growth, to keep the population growth under control. However, this rule or law interferes with a person's most person choise, to have a family. I think its going to far as a law and should be chaged to a goal or recomandation.

Sunni and Shiite

Rachel Weskalnies
Sunni & Shiite

Knowing the difference between the Sunni and the Shiite is very important. “Iraq and Iran are majority Shiite nations while the rest of the Muslim world is mostly Sunni.”(Stein) A large majority of the people in the government agencies, such as Mr. Bald- executive counterterrorism operations and Willie Hulon-chief of National Security, do not know the difference between the two groups.
It is important for the people who run the government agencies to know who is who. In order to have an enemy you should be able to identify the enemy and know their backgrounds.  To be prepared for battle a U.S. soldier needs to be familiar with the culture, beliefs and history of the people he is fighting. The more you know your enemy the more prepared you would be in battle. Soldiers cannot be trained well for battle if the people that are sending them there are not educated about the differences between the Sunni and the Shiite.
Even though it can be difficult to understand the differences between the Sunni and the Shiite it is still essential for the government agencies that are involved to be well educated and understanding about the enemies they are at war with.

Isreali- Palestinian Conflict in the News

The article I read seemed as though it was pro- Palestinian. This article was about Jerusalem’s planning committee considering a proposal to build an underground parking lot for the Old City by breaching the 16th-century walls of Suleiman the Magnificent and digging into the rock beneath the ancient Jewish Quarter. “Just when it seemed as though no amount of building in Israel’s settlements and harsh statements at the United Nations by the country’s foreign minister could truly provoke new violence between Israelis and Palestinians, the Jerusalem municipality came up with something guaranteed to steam up some hotheads.”
Some people believe it is illegal, such as the director of the Palestinian Authority’s government media center. He thinks that “building an underground parking lot for the Old City will aggravate the strain between Israelis and Palestinians and have a negative effect on current international efforts to renew the political process.” Even though this plan has not yet been approved by the city committee I still agree that building this parking lot would create a lot of stiffness and tension.
This article seemed as though it was only listening to Palestinians side of the story. It does not mention what the Israelis think about the underground parking lot. That is why I believe that this online article is pro- Palestine.

Air Travel Before and After 9-11

Rachel Weskalnies
Air Travel Before and After 9-11

On September 11, 2001 there was a terrorist attack on the World Trade Center (also known as the Twin Towers) in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington DC. These terrorists basically decided that they didn’t like what America stands for: freedom, liberty, and the rights of men and women. So on the morning of September 11, 2001, they hijacked four planes and attacked America in a terrible way. Hundreds of people were on the planes, and thousands of people lost their lives through these attacks.
Before 9/11 travelers could get to the airport 20 to 15 minutes before their flight and still be able to get on the airplane. You could also go through screening more quickly at the airport. Now, after the attack you have to get to the airport earlier to get on your flight and the airport security has more invasive searches including the elderly and young children. “Delta, United, US Airways and Northwest Airlines all declared bankruptcy following the tragedy” (Thomas 1). When passengers travel, they will be required to provide the following Secure Flight Passenger Data (SFPD) to their airline when making a reservation: Name as it appears on government-issued I.D. when traveling, Date of Birth, Gender, Redress Number (if available)  The airline will transmit this information to Secure Flight, who uses it to perform watch list matching. This serves to prevent individuals on the No Fly List from boarding an aircraft and to identify individuals on the Selectee List for enhanced screening. After matching passenger information against government watch lists, Secure Flight transmits the matching results back to airlines.Due to difference in boarding pass systems, boarding passes may not always display the exact name you provided when booking your travel. The name you provide when booking your travel is used to perform the watch list matching before a boarding pass is ever issued, so small differences should not impact your travel. You should ensure that the name provided when booking your travel matches the government ID that you will use when traveling. Small differences between the passenger's ID the passenger's reservation information, and the boarding pass (such as the use of a middle initial instead of a full middle name or no middle name/initial at all, hyphens or apostrophes) should not cause a problem for the passenger (Secure Flight Program 1).
The airplane security also became more secure. Standard cockpit doors were replaced with Intruder/ bullet resistant doors containing entry codes. Procedures were put into action that required food carts that were to be placed in the isle in front of the cockpit door. So when the pilot leaves the cockpit it will prevent anyone from possibly entering. Also, Pilots were permitted to Carry Guns in the cockpit as Federal Flight Deck Officers.
Even though this attack has changed America and the people that live here, I think we should still stay strong and keep our faith in what our country stands for and honor the memory of all members of the US military who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the conflicts since 9/11.

bread prices rising in Mozambique

Where do you see Globalization in this story? How is Mozambique impacted by Globalization? Complete a country analysis of Mozambique on your blog.

In the news story about bread prices rising in Mozambique, there are a few examples of Globalization.
The most important example is the Russians raising the price of wheat because of fires and droughts damaging the wheat crop. This caused the price of bread to rise 30% in Mozambique.  The people of Mozambique became very upset and began to riot because they couldn’t afford the bread with their dollar-a-day income.  Secondly the government of Mozambique decided to subsidies the price of bread so the people would stop rioting.
